Solar PV FAQ's

How Solar PV cells work

Photovoltaic cells convert radiation from the sun into electricity, the cell is made from 2 layers of Silicon which create an electric field across the layers creating a flow of electricity.

How much electricity do solar panels create ?

An array such as a 1KW array which is optimally orientated will generate approximately 850KWh units of electricity per year.

What is an inverter and what does it do ?

Because the electricity created from the sun is produced in DC (Direct Current) for us to be able use it in the household electrical system it needs to be changed to AC (Alternating Current), this is achieved by using an electrical inverter which converts DC to AC.

What is the difference between Monocrystalline & Polycrystalline cells ?

Monocrystalline cells are made from a single silicon crystal and are generally more efficient however they are more costly than Polycrystalline cells which are made from a cast block of silicon containing smaller crystals.

What size do Solar Panels come in ?

Panels of 250W are generally 1m by 1.7m in dimensions, so a 1KW system will require 8sq metres to fit on a roof and a 16 Panel 4 KW system will need roughly 28sq metres. Panels can be fitted in landscape, portrait or a mixture so as to maximize the space available.

Where can Panels be installed ?

PV systems can be installed in a number of locations :-

  • Roof mounted
  • Flat Roof Mounted
  • Ground Solutions

What is the impact of Shading on PV systems ?

Shading from trees or buildings can have a large impact on the performance of a PV array so careful consideration needs to be taken when surveying a property.

What manufacturer guarantees & warranties come with the PV systems ?

As a rule the panels have a 10 year warranty with a 25 year performance guarantee, whereas the inverter comes with a 5 or 10 year warranty. Pleae check our systems for details as we aim to get our customers the best warranties available.

What is the best orientation and pitch for my panels ?

The ideal pitch for a roof is between 30 and 40 degrees and a South facing roof is optimum.
